The Hilo Community Chorus is a non-profit 501(c)(3) non-auditioned chorus. Anyone who loves choral singing and is willing to devote two hours each week in rehearsals is invited to join. The Chorus generally performs two concerts a year: a concert of seasonal songs and carols in December and a classical music concert in the spring. Each December, in addition to their concert of seasonal music, the Chorus participates in a Messiah sing-along. Also, members of the Chorus are regular participants of concerts in New York sponsored by DCINY. This includes several Martin Luther King, Jr. Day concerts at Carnegie Hall, and Thanksgiving weekend Messiah concerts at Lincoln Center. Members have also participated in DCINY concerts in China, South America, and Turkey with the Jonathan Griffith Singers. Rehearsals are on Mondays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the University rehearsal room. For the December concerts, rehearsals begin in late August; rehearsals for the spring concerts begin in mid-January. Contact music director Tom McAlexander (phone 808-985-7192; email tommac@hawaii.rr.com) for more information.

WeSingtheSpring_poster

The University of Hawai`i at Hilo’s Kapili Choir and University Chorus join the Hilo Community Chorus, to present We Sing the Spring, on Sunday, May 6 at 2 pm in the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center (click link to see concert location in Google Maps).

The first half of the concert features a performance of renowned choral composer John Rutter’s composition, “Requiem.” The seven-movement work builds on traditional Catholic and Anglican liturgy for a service of mourning, while incorporating more contemporary idioms including the blues.

The second half showcases each of the choirs in their own set of songs, with styles ranging from the Baroque to popular melodies of Hawai’i, including selections arranged by island musicians Michael Springer and Rodney Wong.

We Sing the Spring is conducted jointly by Amy Horst and Tom McAlexander and accompanied by Walter Greenwood on piano. Featured performers include Performing Arts major Adrianna Zablan as soprano soloist, Kamehameha Schools teacher and composer Herb Mahelona on cello and local musician Merry Kay Kiyan on oboe.

Tickets are $10 General, $7 Discount and $5 UH Hilo/Hawaiʻi CC students(with a valid student ID) and children, up to age 17.  Tickets are available by calling the UH Hilo Box Office at 932-7490, Tuesday – Friday, 10 am – 2 pm, or ordering online at artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu.

Our Spring program will be a May joint concert with the University choruses. The exact date of the concert is not confirmed yet, but it will most likely be in the early part of May 2018. Jointly we will perform Requiem by John Rutter.  The second half of the concert (or perhaps first half) will be both of the University choruses and our chorus singing fifteen minute programs. Ours will be “The Last Words of David” by Randall Thompson and “My Heart Is Inditing” by Handel.

New singers are welcome. There is no audition, and no previous choral experience is required.  The only requirement is a commitment to attend Monday rehearsals each week and to practice one hour a week outside of rehearsal if needed.

Requiem scores will be available for purchase at the rehearsal for $10. 11TH ANNUAL MESSIAH SING-ALONG, SUNDAY DECEMBER 10, 2017, 2:15 PM, CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH

Jesus-Christ-The-MessiahHilo Community Chorus will host Hilo’s annual Messiah sing-along at 2:15 PM, December 10, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church, 595 Kapiolani St, Hilo HI, 96720. (click link to go to location in Google Maps)

YOU ARE THE CHORUS.  Scores will be provided for use by the singing public, or bring your own score.  Listeners also welcome.

From Wikipedia: “Messiah was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.”

The sing-along will consist of Part 1 plus the famous Hallelujah chorus.  Soloists for the event will be Amy Horst, Gerdine Markus, Ian McMillan and Barry Brandes.

Hilo Community Chorus presents free concert “An Olde World Christmas” Saturday, December 2, 2017, 2:00 PM

Poster by Greg

The Hilo Community Chorus will present its annual holiday concert of carols and seasonal music at 2 PM Saturday, Dec. 2, at First United Protestant Church.

Tom McAlexander, the group’s longtime musical director, will conduct the performance and Walter Greenwood will accompany on organ and piano. Admission is free.

The concert features the hauntingly beautiful new “Magnificat” for chorus and soprano soloist by up-and-coming Norwegian composer Kim Andre Arnesen. HCC is excited to present the work of such a young composer.

Arnesen was born in 1980 and already is receiving worldwide recognition. His “Magnificat,” written and first performed in 2010, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016.

The soprano solos will be sung by Amy Horst, who is well known to Hawaii audiences for her frequent recitals and concerts and for her portrayal of Mary Poppins in the Palace Theater’s recent musical production. Horst also is director of choral studies at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

The second half of the concert features seven chorus members as soloists in the “International Carol Suites” by American composer Mark Hayes. The three suites are newly composed for 2017. They compile various traditional and seasonal songs from Western and Eastern Europe and the British Isles in inventive and surprising ways.

The First United Protestant Church is located at 1350 Waianuenue Ave. above the Hilo Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Hilo Clinic . (click above link to go to location in Google Maps).

An interview with composer Kim Andre Arnesen can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5Ksw0UDX2A .  An interview with composer Mark Hayes can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sSgY1oeTkA

In addition to the First United concert, the Hilo Community Chorus will host Hilo’s annual Messiah sing-along at 2:15 p.m. Dec. 10 at Christ Lutheran Church, 595 Kapiolani St. Soloists for the event will be Horst, Gerdine Markus, Ian McMillan and Barry Brandes. Singers and listeners are welcome.

The Hilo Community Chorus is a nonprofit organization. Members are not auditioned. Anyone interested in singing with the group can contact McAlexander at tommac@hawaii.rr.com.  (some text copied from Hawaii Tribune Herald article here , no author attributed)
